Finish the Job: Depth and Pace From a Complete Follow-Through

Adapted from Ajay Pant’s Tennis Magazine / TENNIS.com tip “Finish the Job” (September 2006).

Ending a groundstroke with a complete follow-through usually means you accelerated the racquet head through the contact zone—the ingredient behind depth and pace. Paradox: the harder you try to “finish,” the more you decelerate and poke.

The back-door fix

When players struggle to finish forehands and backhands, skip staring at the finish photo. Instead, swing so every ball travels past the baseline—ideally toward the back fence. You cannot do that without truly hitting through the ball.

Then bring it back in

After about 10 minutes of the long-ball drill, ask for balls that land inside the court. Depth and pace often show up together once the racquet is accelerating again. Use this the next time you are spraying short or steering under pressure.
